Leibovitz Drops Models in Favour of Strong, Independent Women for Pirelli 2016 Calendar

The fashion world went nuts earlier this week when it was announced that Annie Leibovitz, this year’s headlining photographer for the illustrious Pirelli Calendar made the decision to drop the models. Calling on old friends like Yoko Ono and new found celebs the subtle curves and focus on the female form which the calendar is known for has been ditched… for talent.

Featuring a mostly clothed 12+ females set to an intentionally dross background the aim is to present more than just shapes, skin tones and nudity. The inclusion of sports superstar Serena Williams and comedienne Amy Schumer will be a breath of fresh air to some. In fact this year’s calendar only features one professional model, Natalia Vodianova.

Leibovitz has been asked to photograph for Pirelli once before for the 2000 edition of the calendar. The approach taken fifteen years ago was against the grain also with only two models appearing in contorted forms presented in a painterly fashion.

Here’s a few behind the scenes images courtesy of Annie Leibovitz Studios.
